I didn't buy this vest, from Amazon.com :-( because my dog is an odd size and I had a gift certificate for a local store. This vest fits him very good. We even tried it out and he acted as if he wasn't wearing it. We went to the beach and he is was the talk of the group. A Pug wearing a lifevest while running in and out of the water with the big boys. I would highly recommend this for a small dog, any dog. It has clips so he could easily be picked up without it unhooking. Like someone said "like picking up a six-pack". I like the extra floatation at the front so my Pugs' nose is kept above the water. Now, I have to remember to put it in the car whenever I take him out, just in case we come across some water for him to jump into. Thank you

What do you know about Dog life jackets?

I have two male golden retrievers, an 11 year old and a 2 year old. When I got my 11 year old (who was only 1 at the time), it became apparent that he LOVED water (big surprise there!). As he's gotten older, he still loves to swim, but he doesn't realize that he can't swim as far or as hard as he used to. I still want to be able to take him to a lake to swim and run around, but I'm afraid of him drowning. I've done some research on dog life jackets, and I'm thinking about getting one for him. My other dog, Berkerely, the 2 year old, finally got to go the lake for the first time a few months ago. He was eager to swim, but once he was in to his shoulders, he would panic a bit. For him, I'd like to see if a life jacket would help until he's better at swimming. Has anyone had any experience with them? What is a good brand or does it not matter? How well do they work? Does your dog feel uncomfortable in one? Thanks! I don't know why I capitalized the word dog in my title...

I think they are wonderful ideas for dogs that love to swim but need extra help in order to keep doing that. I have seen many dogs that were not natural swimmers and a life jacket would help them a lot. Swimming is a great form of exercise because it has no impact on the body. Hi my partner and i are debating over a life jacket for the puppy while walking around a lake or beach he is only 4 months old and hasn't been near water like this before my partner is saying he doesn't want him on one but i wanna go buy a 60 dollar life jacket for him when he is around water we also go in the boat quite a bit and i feel that it would be A lot safer for him any advice please our puppy is a maltese shitzu We live at the beach and yes we would get our moneys worth the only reason i want him in one is because we had a lab pup drown at 6 months I do wear a life jacket around the beach and lake because i cant swim and because the ocean is at the beach we are right on westenport bay and we travel to port phillip alot to just to walk around along the peir and beach

My dog wears a life jacket both at the beach and on boats. I live on one of the Great Lakes and every year we have people who get caught in the undertow and drown, and more people who try to save the first ones from the undertow and drown also. I think its a VERY good idea for a dog to wear one. I also have a small dog, like you. Before this I had a labrador and a shepherd. The lab was a strong swimmer, and only wore a Jacket on boats, and when she became elderly. The shepherd was a dismal swimmer, and wore his at all times. In a way, it depends on the dog,whether to wear one on the beach but I think they are essential for all small dogs, as its far too easy for them to be swept under water. ALL dogs should wear a life jacket on a boat. If they fall overboard, they may become tired before they make it to shore, or they may become disoriented or not see shore and simply swim in circles. Plus, a life jackey generally has handles to help hoist them back on board, and allows other motorists to see your dog in the water. Be sure to pick a good quality life jacket that fits snugly and allows for a full range of motion. A jacket that is too big, or too restrictive will do your dog now favors.
